Ironstone Creek Sanctuary

Ironstone Creek Sanctuary is located on Gubbi Gubbi Country.

Nestled in the picturesque Mary Valley, we’re approximately 40 minutes drive from Noosa, and 30 minutes from Gympie.

The home circle is located a short bush walk from the parking area. This is where most play sessions are held, nestled amongst the trees in a grassy clearing. There is a seasonally flowing creek through the rainforest, where play sessions may be held periodically to explore the aquatic world.

The property had been used for cattle grazing for the last 50 years. Like most of the valley, it was extensively cleared in the early 1900s. As the current custodians, Jessica and Angus (and Juni) are making it their life mission to transform this once grazing property into the wild bush and rainforest it once was, improving habitat through assisted and natural revegetation.

At Ironstone Creek Sanctuary there are a number of ecosystem types, including Acacia open woodland, notophyll vine forest, Eucalyptus tall open forest and grassland. Fauna includes countless bird species (our favourites are the yellow tail black cockatoo and rainbow bee eaters), wallabies, antechinus, reptiles including red belly black snakes, carpet pythons, tree snakes and lace monitors.

Our Vision

Through holistic land management, our vision is to live sustainably and become self reliant with minimal environmental impact. A small proportion of the property is dedicated to living and food production, while the rest is dedicated to wildlife. In today's changing climate and rapid destruction of wild habitats, we are working towards turning the property into the healthy forest that it once was. We hope to educate visitors about conservation and inspire people to change the way they live to create a more resilient and sustainable community. Through our Regeneration projects, we hope to educate people about land restoration and conservation.

Ironstone Creek Sanctuary is listed as a sanctuary with the Humane Society International Wildlife Land Trust and is part of the Land for Wildlife program.
